2024년에 등장해 무서운 속도로 Python 생태계의 새로운 사실상 표준으로서 자리 잡아가고 있는 패키지 및 프로젝트 매니저로, 출시 후 1년 동안 약 50k의 GitHub 스타를 받았다. 가장 큰 특징은 역시 속도인데, Rust로 작성된 툴인 만큼 그래프에서 볼 수 있듯이 기존 pip 대비 10~100배에 가까운 패키지 설치 속도를 보여준다.

비슷한 시기에 맞물려 최근 AI 개발계에서 뜨거운 감자인 MCP 서버들도 배포 수단으로 지원하는 등 속도 면에서의 압도적 사용자 경험으로 인해 빠르게 퍼지고 있다. 특히 PyTorch 등 머신러닝 분야에서 쓰이는 Python 코드들은 의존하는 패키지가 무겁고 개수도 많아 새로이 환경을 구성해야 할 때 패키지 설치 과정에서 시간을 많이 잡아먹게 되는데, 이 부분에서 uv의 특장점이 십분 발휘된다. requirements.txt 등으로 관리되던 기존의 pip 인터페이스 또한 자체적으로 지원하며, 배포 또한 pip 형식으로도 가능하다.

최근 나온 패키지 매니저답게 기존의 가상 환경 관리자와 프로젝트 매니저가 하던 역할을 모두 수행할 수 있으며 사용법 또한 간결하다. 기존의 pip 속도에서 답답함을 느꼈던 Python 프로그래머라면 반드시 써 봐야 할 패키지 매니저다.

pyproject.toml 파일에 프로젝트 정보와 의존하는 패키지를 적어 두는 것만으로 준비가 끝난다.

3. uv는 왜 빠른가

uv가 빠른 이유는 단순히 Rust로 작성되었기 때문이 아니다.

과거 Python의 패키징은 setup.py를 실행해야만 의존성을 확인할 수 있었다. 2016년부터 시작된 개선 작업으로 setup.py없이 의존성을 알 수 있도록 설계가 변경되었고, 특히 PEP658은 메타데이터를 api에 노출하여, 라이브러리를 다운로드하지 않고 의존성을 확인할 수 있게 했다.

uv는 많은 레거시 호환 기능을 제거했다. uv는 .egg, pip.conf, 바이트코드 컴파일, requires-python 상한 등 많은 기능을 지원하지 않는다. 그리고 uv에 적용된 병렬 다운로드, 하드링크 기반 글로벌 캐시, HTTP range request, PubGrub 의존성 해석 알고리즘 등 주요 최적화는 Rust없이도 구현 가능하다.

uv의 빠른 속도에 Rust가 도움을 준 것은 맞다. 하지만 그보다는 현대적인 패키징 표준과 레거시 제거 그리고 최적화 알고리즘의 도입 덕분이라 하는 것이 더 적합하다.[3]
