1. 개요
실버 스카이(Silver Sky)는 미국의 현악기, 음향기기 제조사인 PRS에서 2018년부터 생산중인 일렉트릭 기타 모델군이다.미국의 기타리스트, 싱어송라이터인 존 메이어의 시그니처 모델로 출시되었다.
2. 상세
존 메이어가 펜더와의 관계를 정리하고 엔도스먼트를 PRS로 옮긴 뒤 선보인 시그니처 모델로, 'PRS 스타일로 재해석한 스트라토캐스터' 정도 위치에 있는 모델이다. 이 때문에 발표 초기에는 PRS가 펜더를 대놓고 베꼈다며 큰 논란이 있기도 했다.[2]픽업은 PRS에서 자체 제작한 존 메이어의 시그니처 픽업인 635JM 싱글 코일 픽업이 사용되었다. 사운드는 깽깽대는 싱글 코일 픽업 특유의 사운드이긴 하나, 빈티지하고 정제되지 않은 맛이 있는 (빈티지 성향) 펜더 스트라토캐스터 대비 고음역대가 더 듣기 좋게 정리되고 사운드가 전반적으로 정제된 성향이다.
나름의 인기에 힘입어 SE 시리즈로도 실버 스카이가 생산되기 시작했는데, 디테일을 잘 살펴보면 바디 목재[3]나 트러스로드 커버의 형태 등 여기저기 사양 차이가 있다. 존 메이어의 이름값에 SE 시리즈를 통한 보급형 모델로서의 생산이라는 시너지 효과 덕에 판매량이 꽤 높았었다. 현재도 100만 원대 내외의 중급형 스트라토캐스터를 추천한다면 펜더 멕시코 스트라토캐스터, 쉑터 닉 존스턴 트레디셔널 시리즈와 함께 가장 많이 추천되는 기종일 정도. 2022년까지는 가격대 및 공정 수월성 탓인지 로즈우드 지판 한 종류만으로 생산했으나, 2023년 이후부터는 메이플 지판 SE 실버 스카이 또한 생산되고 있다.

전반적인 사양은 볼트 온 시리즈에서 나오는 정규 실버 스카이 모델들과 비슷하나 몇몇 부분에서는 제법 독특한 부분들을 찾아볼 수 있는데, 이는 그레이트풀 데드의 기타리스트였던 제리 가르시아가 사용하던 기타들에서 컨셉을 따온 것으로 알려져 있다. 정규 실버 스카이 대비 달라진 부분들은 아래와 같다.
- 너트가 기존의 합성 본 재질에서 황동(브라스) 재질로 교체되었다.
- 헤드 부분에 플로이드 로즈나 켈러 트레몰로를 연상케 하는 금속 막대기 형태의 스트링 리테이너가 추가되었다.
- 바디는 기존의 엘더(오리나무)에서 스웜프 애쉬(물푸레나무)로 교체되었다. 피니쉬도 반투명한 피니쉬를 적용하여 스웜프 애쉬 특유의 강렬한 목재 무늬가 그대로 노출되어 있으며, 일반 실버 스카이와는 다른 인상을 준다.
- 볼트를 조여 브릿지를 탑에 밀착시킴으로서 마치 고정형 브릿지처럼 사용할 수 있도록 개량된 PRS 트레몰로 브릿지가 적용되었다.
- 순정 아웃풋 잭이 알렘빅 블라스터(Alembic Blaster)[4] 회로가 내장된 황동제 아웃풋 플레이트로 교체되었다. 이는 데드 스펙 실버 스카이의 가장 큰 특징이자 변경점 중 하나로, 본래 그레이트풀 데드의 제리 가르시아가 본인의 펜더 스트라토캐스터에 장착하여 사용하던 것을 그대로 적용한 것이다.
이 데드 스펙 실버 스카이는 처음 공개된 2023년 즈음 1,000대 한정판으로 생산되어 소비자들 대상으로 판매되었다.

- 미국의 악기 및 음향기기 거래 플랫폼인 Reverb에서 2021년 기준 가장 높은 판매량을 기록한 일렉트릭 기타 모델로 집계되었다. 이는 시그니처 주인인 존 메이어의 네임벨류와 상대적으로 저렴한 실버스카이 SE 시리즈의 출시가 플러스 시너지를 일으킨 덕으로 풀이된다.
