1. 개요
T32는 Arm의 고밀도 명령어 집합으로, 16비트와 32비트의 가변 길이 명령어로 구성되어 있다. 동일 알고리즘을 동일 컴파일러로 빌드했을 때 A32 대비 코드 크기를 30% 안팎으로 줄이는 것을 주된 설계 목표로 삼는다.원래는 Thumb이라는 이름으로 1995년 Armv4T에서 도입된 16비트 길이 전용 명령어 집합이었으며, 2003년 Armv6T2에서 32비트 명령어를 추가한 Thumb-2로 확장되었다.
Armv8-A에서 64비트 명령어 집합인 A64가 도입되면서 기존 32비트 명령어 집합인 Arm/Thumb이 각각 A32/T32로 개명되었으며, AArch32 실행 상태에서 A32와 함께 동작한다.

초기 ARM 명령어 집합은 고정 길이 32비트 인코딩을 사용했기 때문에 메모리가 비싸고 버스 폭이 좁은 임베디드 환경에서는 코드 크기가 부담이 될 수 있었다. Thumb는 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 자주 쓰이는 ARM 명령어를 더 짧은 16비트 형태로 표현하는 명령어 집합으로 도입되었다.초기 Thumb는 의도적으로 제한된 ISA였다. 명령어 폭을 16비트로 줄이기 위해 사용할 수 있는 레지스터와 상수값 범위, 주소 지정 방식이 줄어들었다. 그 결과 단순한 C 코드나 제어 코드에서는 코드 크기를 크게 줄일 수 있었지만, 복잡한 산술 연산이나 레지스터 압박이 큰 코드에서는 A32보다 명령어 수가 늘어날 수 있었다. 이 때문에 초기 Arm 소프트웨어에서는 코드 크기가 중요한 부분은 Thumb, 성능이 중요한 부분은 A32로 작성하는 식의 상호 운용이 이루어졌다.
Thumb와 A32의 전환은 주로
BX, BLX 같은 분기 명령어를 통해 이루어졌다. 함수 포인터나 분기 대상 주소의 하위 비트는 실행할 명령어 상태를 나타내는 데 사용될 수 있었고, 실제 분기 주소는 정렬 규칙에 맞게 해석된다. 이 규칙은 A32와 Thumb 코드가 같은 프로그램 안에서 공존할 수 있게 한 핵심 장치였다.2000년대에 들어서면서 초기 Thumb의 한계가 분명해졌다. 단순한 16비트 부분집합만으로는 A32의 기능과 성능을 충분히 대체하기 어려웠고, 상태 전환을 자주 사용하면 컴파일러와 ABI, 디버깅도 복잡해졌다. Arm은 이를 해결하기 위해 Armv6T2에서 Thumb-2 기술을 도입했다.
Thumb-2는 Thumb에 32비트 명령어를 추가한 확장이다. 자주 쓰이는 짧은 명령어는 16비트로 유지하고, 기존 Thumb로 표현하기 어려웠던 연산은 32비트 명령어로 처리한다. 이로써 Thumb 계열은 코드 밀도와 기능 범위를 동시에 확보하게 되었고, A32와 별도로 상태를 자주 전환해야 하는 부담도 줄어들었다.
Armv8-A에서 AArch64와 A64가 도입되면서, 기존 32비트 실행 상태와 명령어 집합의 이름도 정리되었다. ARM state의 명령어 집합은 A32, Thumb state의 명령어 집합은 T32로 불리게 되었다. 이 명칭 변경은 단순한 리브랜딩이 아니라, AArch32 안에 A32와 T32가 있고 AArch64 안에 A64가 있다는 구조를 명확히 하기 위한 것이다.
