1. 개요

영국의 배우, 가수 및 싱어송라이터. 영국의 밴드 Years & Years의 리드 보컬을 맡고 있다.

2. 생애

영국 요크셔에서 태어났다. 그의 어머니는 콜퍼드(Colford) 음악 축제의 창립자 중 한명인 비키 선튼(Vicki Thornton)이다. 올리의 부모님은 올리가 13살이었을 때 이혼했으며, 이후 올리는 어머니 밑에서 자랐다.

Colford에 위치한 St John's Primary School과 Monmouth Comprehensive School을 다녔고, 예술을 공부하기 위해 Hereford College of Arts에 진학하였다. Monmouth Comprehensive School에 다니는 동안 올리는 두 개의 학교 연극에 참가했는데, Guys and Dolls의 Benny역과 The Caucasian Chalk Circle에서 하사 역을 맡았다. 올리는 이미 10살때 아버지의 카시오 키보드에 첫 노래를 썼다고 한다.

NylonMagazineTV라는 유튜브 채널의 인터뷰에서, 연기를 하기 위해 Hereford College of Arts 학교를 중퇴했다는 것을 밝혔다. 이와 더불어 그는 어렸을 때부터 학교를 싫어하여 연기를 하면서도 가수나 음악가가 되고 싶었다고 밝혔다.[1]

2.1. 배우 활동

첫 영화는 2008년 개봉한 영화 서머힐(Summerhill)이다. 그의 다음 출연작인 브라이트 스타(Bright star)는 미국 아카데미 시상식에 최우수 의상 디자인으로 노미네이트 되었다. 2009년에 개봉한 영화 Tormented에 출연하였고, 2010년에는 Bush Theatre에서 공연된 The Aliens라는 연극에 출연하였다. 또 2011년 초 개봉한 인디 필름 The Dish & The Spoon에 극본, 음악에 참여하였고, 배우로 출연하였다.

2013년 3월부터 6월까지 웨스트 엔드에서 연극 Peter and Alice에서 피터팬 역을 맡았다. 여기서 Bright Star에 같이 출연한 벤 위쇼와 다시 만났고, 그 인연으로 벤 위쇼는 Years & Years의 뮤직비디오 Real에 출연했다.

영국 드라마 스킨스 시즌 7 3, 4화에서 캐시(한나 머리분)를 스토킹하는 제이콥 역할로 나왔다.

2014년 개봉한 영화 God Help The Girl[2]에서는 주인공 3명 중 하나인 제임스 역으로 출연하였다. 스킨스 시즌 7에서 올리에게 스토킹을 당하는 역할이었던 한나 머리도 나왔으며, 이 영화에서도 한나 머리의 역할 이름이 스킨스에서와 같은 '캐시'이다.

그 후 라이엇 클럽과, 직접 각본에 참여하고 주연으로 나온 퍼니 버니라는 영화에 출연 후, 배우보다는 가수 활동에 더 집중하고 싶다며 더 이상 연기는 안 하는 상태.

2.2. 밴드 활동

2013년 9월, Kitsuné을 통해 Years & Years의 싱글인 "Traps"을 발표하며 가수로 데뷔하였다.

밴드이니 만큼 모든 곡들은 올리가 작사 작곡하는데, 그룹의 노래를 들어보면 boy[3]나 he와 같은 남성 대명사를 볼 수 있다. 이에 대해 올리는 게이인 팝스타들이 (남성대명사를 쓰는) 남자에 대해서 노래를 하지 않는다는 것이 조금 슬프다[4]고 인터뷰에서 밝혔다.

6. 사생활

채식주의자이다. 비건 [5]이지만 우유는 마신다.

영국의 그룹 클린 밴딧의 멤버 닐 아민과 1년 가량 교제하다 2015년 11월 쯤 결별했다.[6] 이유는 둘 다 투어 때문에 너무 바빠서 아이러니하게도 둘이 처음 만난 것도 클린 밴딧의 투어 공연때 오프닝 밴드로 서면서 이고 헤어진 이유도 투어 때문이다. 두 그룹 각자 투어 돌 때 같은 땅에 있으면서도 끝과 끝에 있어 주로 닐이 비행기를 타고 가서 만났다고. 인터뷰에 따르면 점점 떨어져 있는 시간이 많아지면서 결국에는 그 전처럼 지내지 못할 것 같다고 생각했다고 한다. 안좋게 끝난 사이는 아니나 재결합 소식도 없는 듯.. 참고로 아직도 닐과 올리의 SNS에 가면 거의 지워졌지만 둘이 연애할 때의 사진이 남아있다.
